Delta: A Unique Placemat Set

Combining Geometry and Functionality

Delta is a placemat set that stands out for its unique design and functionality. Inspired by abstract geometry, Martina Mantaras combines the purity of straight lines with the freedom of using different angles and no set pattern. This innovative approach creates a visually striking and versatile set that adds interest and coziness to any table setting.

What sets Delta apart is its material - designer felt. This material not only provides protection to furniture from heat and liquids but also adds a touch of elegance to the table. The placemat set is designed to withstand temperatures up to 180°C, making it ideal for both hot and cold dishes.

The realization of Delta is made possible through laser-cut technology. This ensures that the edges of the placemats have a perfect finish, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal. The precision of the laser-cutting process allows for intricate designs and clean lines, enhancing the geometric patterns of Delta.

The Delta placemat measures 30 x 29.5 cm, while the trivet measures 17.2 x 17 cm, and the coaster measures 9 x 8.7 cm. These dimensions are carefully chosen to provide functionality while maintaining a harmonious composition within the set.

Martina Mantaras, along with Paula Lavagna, designed and manufactured Delta in Montevideo, Uruguay. The project took approximately two weeks to complete in October 2017.

Extensive research was conducted to ensure the perfect finish and functionality of Delta. The team focused on the reaction of the material to laser cutting, aiming to achieve a flawless edge without compromising the integrity of the felt. Additionally, they determined the optimal width separation between cuts to maintain the rigidity required for the placemat set to function effectively.

The creative process presented its own challenges, particularly in finding a pattern that would work seamlessly across all three pieces of the set. The team also had to develop a suitable method for applying the brand logo to each product, considering production constraints.

Delta has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.

Delta placemat set is not only a functional accessory but also a statement piece that adds a touch of sophistication to any dining experience. Its unique design, combined with the use of designer felt and precise laser-cutting technology, sets Delta apart from other placemat sets on the market.
